Year 1 – Beech
Welcome to Year One - Beech Class
Teaching Beech Class this year will be Mrs Paine and Mrs Carter. Helping us will be our Teaching Assistants Mrs Williams and Miss Winter.
Please have a look at our timetable to see how the children’s day is structured. In this term, we will have plenty of flexi-breaks to get the children used to lesson times gradually.
Our topic this term is ‘Celebrations’. We will be researching celebrations from all around the world, including Bonfire night, Diwali, Hanukkah and Christmas.
In Literacy we will be reading books called ‘What not to do at school’ and ‘Harvey Slumfenburger’s Christmas present’. These will help us learn about writing different types of sentences including questions and command, and story writing.
In Maths we will be looking at shapes! We will be able to name and describe 2D shapes such as circles, triangles, rectangles and squares. We will also be looking at adding and taking away mentally and with resources.
Science is all about animals and the different places they live! The focus will be on using the different classes of animals and what they need to be happy and healthy.
PE will be twice a week taught by Mr Nobes. Please remember to bring in clean PE kit each week. There will also be ICT lessons, library sessions, RE, Art and Geography/History once a week.
There will be daily phonics and handwriting sessions and weekly spelling, mental maths and guided reading sessions. Spellings will be linked to phonics lessons and will go home in spelling books to be practised and tested on a Friday. Mental maths will go home on a Monday to practise. We will soon be using a Homework Book so keep an eye out for this!
Phonics is extremely important to your child this year so please read with them once a day – even just a page – and record this in their reading record so that they can change their book.
If you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask us.
