Fir Tree School

Year 1 – Beech

Welcome to Year One - Beech Class

Teaching Beech Class this year will be Mrs Paine and Mrs Williams.

We are both very excited to start a new school year with you all. Helping us will be our Teaching Assistants, Miss Winter and Mr Monger.

Our topic this term is ‘Our World’. We will be discovering the world around us, from the 7 continents right down to our own homes and school.
In Literacy we will be reading books called ‘Knuffle Bunny’ and ‘Not a stick’. These will help us learn about writing fictional stories, and recognising non-fiction texts and how they help us.

In Maths we will be counting lots! We will be able to count to 20 and know one more and one less than a number. We will also be looking at adding mentally.
Science is all about animals, including humans! The focus will be on using our senses and understanding animal lifecycles.

PE will be twice a week taught by Mr Nobes. Please remember to bring in clean PE kit each week. There will also be ICT lessons, library sessions, RE, Art, Geography and Music once a week.

There will be daily phonics lessons, handwriting practice, weekly spelling, and guided reading sessions. Spellings will be linked to phonics lessons and will go home in spelling books to be practised and tested on a Friday. Homework is expected to be completed once a week. This will either be a Literacy task or a maths problem on or Mathletics.

We know that this is a big transition to make and ask for your help to fully support the children. They will come in on their own and hang their belongings on their pegs after they have lined up at the start of the school day. They choose their lunch by putting their name in the pot with the picture of which main and pudding they would like. Menus are sent home at the beginning of each term. Our timetable is now more structured, but in this term, we will have plenty of flexi-breaks to get the children used to lesson times gradually.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask us.

Thank you

Mrs Paine and Mrs Williams
